Birmingham City Schools planning to open pre-K center

Birmingham City Schools future is bright and school officials plan to invest those leaders of tomorrow. Superintendent Dr. Mark Sullivan says the district is planning to open a pre-kindergarten center next year. This is part of an expansion plan to get more students enrolled in pre-K. Sullivan says the sooner students are exposed to education before starting kindergarten, the better their outcome. For those students who start at kindergarten, sometimes they don’t know their numbers or alphabet’s. School officials feel there’s a distinct difference in students who start sooner rather than waiting. “It is like night and day and it really gives our students who participate in this program a leg up,” Sullivan said. The center will be located at the old North Roebuck School. The facility would house an additional pre-K classes, administration for the program. We’re told the reason this location was chosen is because the population on Birmingham’s east side is steadily increasing. “The old North Roebuck School is a perfect location for that,” Sullivan said. “It’s right in front of Martha Gaskins.””We’re looking at that being sort of an annex to Martha Gaskins. We have the cafeteria staff there, you have the custodial staff there, you have administration there,” the superintendent explained. He says they have invested $7 million in the center. BCS hopes to open sometime in 2023.
